Play smart

Yesterday, we played a short 250-meter par 4 with a dogleg to the right. My first reaction was to pull out the driver and go for the green in one shot. The idea of having an eagle putt is very appealing. However, the green was located on an elevated platform, with fall-offs on all sides. It's a really difficult green to hit with a long shot and no direct view of the hole.
Since at Willy Golf we have so many golf balls, I decided to play the hole two different ways. I played a first ball with an 8-iron to place it in the wide, flat area of the fairway, leaving myself a 100-meter second shot with the sand wedge. From the fairway, I hit a good shot to the green, leaving myself a 6-meter birdie option. Ultimately, I didn't make it, but I walked off the hole with a good par.
Of course, I hit a ball with the driver to try and reach the green in one. Although it was a good shot, the ball landed a few meters short to the right in a hollow. From there, the shot was quite complicated because the green sloped downhill. After an approach that went over 15 meters, I had to recover and save par by sinking a good return putt.
For me, it's a hole that we should play smartly. We're rarely going to miss the fairway hitting an 8-iron off the tee. If we hit a precise shot with the wedge, we can stop the ball well on the green and leave ourselves a good birdie opportunity.
